Guarantee Cabins Explained
“This category or better” — what that really means for your cabin.
Ask Us About Upgrade OptionsA guarantee fare promises you a cabin in a particular category — or a higher one — without letting you choose the exact cabin. It is the source of many upgrade stories and plenty of disappointments.
The Trade-Off
| Guarantee fare | Choosing your cabin | |
|---|---|---|
| Cabin location | Assigned by the line | You choose deck, side and position |
| Chance of a higher category | Possible, not promised | Only if you pay or are offered one |
| Price | Sometimes lower | Varies by location |
| Good for | Flexible travelers who care more about price | Light sleepers, seasickness, groups who want to be together |
Who Should Avoid Guarantee Fares
- Anyone prone to seasickness who needs a low, midship cabin.
- Light sleepers who want to avoid cabins under the pool deck or near show venues.
- Families or groups who want cabins next to each other or connecting.
- Guests who need an accessible cabin or particular bed layout.
- Anyone who would be unhappy with an obstructed view or an out-of-the-way location.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a guarantee fare get me upgraded?
Possibly, but don’t book one expecting it. The guarantee is “this category or better”; many guests receive exactly the category they paid for.
When will I find out my cabin number?
It varies. Some guarantee guests are assigned weeks before sailing, others only shortly before. Some find out at check-in.
Can I refuse the cabin I am assigned?
Usually not without changing your fare. That is the trade-off for the lower price or flexibility of a guarantee.
How Cabins Get Assigned
When you book a guarantee, the cruise line holds you in a category without attaching a cabin number. As sailing approaches, the line matches guarantee bookings to whatever cabins remain. If your category still has open cabins, you will usually be placed in one of them — often the ones nobody chose, which can mean far forward, far aft, near elevators or with a partial view. If your category is full but a higher one has space, the line may place you there instead. That is where “or better” comes from, and it is entirely at the line’s discretion.
The upshot: a guarantee is a pricing and availability tool for the line, and a flexibility tool for you. It is not an upgrade program.
Making a Guarantee Work for You
- Book a guarantee only in a category you would be happy with in any location on the ship.
- Read the fare terms: some guarantee fares have different deposit, change or cancellation rules from regular fares.
- If you are traveling with others, ask whether their bookings can be linked so the line knows you want to be near each other. There is no promise, but it helps.
- Check your cabin assignment on the deck plan as soon as you receive it, using our sister site Cruise Ship Deck Plans.
